The Embera people live in small villages along the banks of the rivers and and live by their own set of unwritten rules. Still today, medicine and healing is primarily provided by Shamans.

Casco Viejo.

Casco Viejo, or Old City was built in 1673 after the total destruction of the original Panamá Viejo in 1671, when it was attacked by pirates. Casco Viejo is a World Heritage Site since 1997.

The Panama Canal

In September, 2007 work began on a $5.2 billion project to expand the Panama Canal. It is expected to be complete in 2014. Considered one of the modern wonders of the world, the 48 mile-long international waterway allows ships to pass between the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean, saving about 8000 miles from a journey around the southern tip of South America, Cabo de Hornos.

Panama La Vieja

Visit Panama la Vieja. Founded in 1519 by Pedro Arias Dávila, the city became a starting point for various expeditions that iniciated the conquest of Perú. In 1610, the city reached a population of 5000, with 500 houses convents and chapels, a Cathedral and a hospital. On 21 February 1644, a fire destroyed 83 religious buildings, including the cathedral.On 28 January 1671, the the city was attacked by the Henry Morgan. Learned about the fascinating history of this impressive city.

The Altar of Gold.

The famous baroque styled Altar is made of mahogany and cover by laminated gold. When Capitain Morgan invaded Panama Viejo in 1671, the priest painted it in white so it would look like a simple wooden carved altar.

The Diablos Rojos.

For many years the Diablos Rojos were the main way of transportation in Panama. Each had its unique design that represented the personality of its owner. They showed vibrant colors and local art.
